Activity:
Learning to Sign for "Milk"
Skills:
eye contact, communication, self-help
Materials:
bottle
Procedure:
- At feeding time, hold the child's bottle in one hand
and show the child the ASL (American Sign Language) sign for
"milk" with the other hand. Hold hands close to your
face under your eyes. Simultaneously ask, "Andrew, do you
want your milk?" Make sure to have the child's attention
and eye contact.
- If the child makes the sign for "milk" or
signs a good approximation of "milk", give the child
the bottle.
- If the child looks up, but doesn't attempt to sign,
ask the child and show the sign for "milk" one or two
more times. Then, if the child allows, form the child's hand
to make the sign for "milk".
- Give the child the bottle.
- Repeat at the next naturally occurring time.
