Activity:         Sandbox Volcano:  children build a mountain of sand and experiment with making lava.

Skills:            predicting, observing, cooperation

Materials:       baking soda, vinegar, paper cup

Procedure:

1. Teacher and children work together to build a large mountain in the sandbox.
2. Pack sand tightly as you go along.
3. Dig a hole in the top, large enough to insert a paper cup.
4. Form sand around the cup to keep it in place.
5. Fill the cup with vinegar. (Food coloring is not needed but color adds to the fun.)
6. Add one spoonful of baking soda to the vinegar.
7. Observe what happens. Do it again and again.
